Canal San Bovo between the Ecomuseo, forests and mountain trails
Accommodation in Canal San Bovo
Canal San Bovo brings together culture, waterways and mountain landscapes within a compact thematic area. A good starting point is the Casa dell'Ecomuseo at the entrance to Canal San Bovo. It is a cultural centre dedicated to promoting the area and its traditions. If you would like to get to know the character of the Vanoi not only through landscape views, but also through its history and everyday culture, this is where a particularly vivid exploration begins.
Culture between landscape and everyday life
The ground floor of the Casa dell'Ecomuseo contains three exhibition rooms. The view then broadens to the Ecomuseo del Vanoi: this museum, spread throughout the area, covers the environment, landscape, local communities and human activities of the Vanoi. The individual exhibition sites and the landscape are therefore not independent of one another, but address different aspects of the same valley.
Smaller collections offer further insights. The Piccolo Museo della Val dei Faori preserves ethnographic objects and tools collected by Giovanni Fontan over time. The collection at the RadioMuseo del Vanoi ranges from radios and radio equipment to record players and music cabinets, as well as historical books and magazines and other material from bygone eras. These museums are especially appealing to travellers who enjoy tracing regional history through tangible objects.
Water and trails as a travel experience
The Anello dell'Acqua circular trail begins at the Casa dell'Ecomuseo and explores the area through the theme of water. The Sentiero Etnografico di Caoria also combines movement and culture: it offers more than 25 km of hiking trails between Val Sorda and Val Zanca. This allows you to compare a shorter thematic circular trail with a more extensive hiking option, without suggesting that both trails offer the same experience.
The Torrente Vanoi also offers a 5 km rafting route from Canal San Bovo through the Valle della Cortella to Pont de Oltra. It is intended for experienced paddlers. When water levels are low, the route is also suitable for less experienced participants with appropriate supervision. For planning purposes, the key distinction is therefore between a hike with an ethnographic focus and a water-based activity.
Caoria, forests and alpine trails
The state forests of Valzanca and Valsorda form the Caoria forest complex and lie entirely within the Paneveggio Pale di San Martino Nature Park. The forests can be reached via Provincial Road No. 56, which leads from Canal San Bovo to Caoria. This connection highlights the transition between the town and the forest area as a distinct landscape focus, without equating the two areas.
Another alpine point of interest is the Cima Cece da Caoria circular hiking trail. It begins in Pont de Stél; this starting point is accessible by private transport throughout the summer season. The trail passes through the typical natural surroundings of the Lagorai, crossing alpine meadows and passing high-altitude porphyry formations bearing numerous remains from the First World War. This hike therefore combines open mountain landscapes with visible traces of the past.
