Churches, Art and Industrial History

Cogolo combines modern sacred architecture with older churches, industrial history and trails through forests, meadows and mountain landscapes. The Chiesa Nuova Maria Madre della Chiesa was built between 1970 and 1974 and consecrated in 1974. Its load-bearing structures are made of reinforced concrete, while the exposed blocks are made of granite; inside are sculptures by local artists Renato Perini and Luciano Carnessali. The history of Punta Linke also reaches back into the history of technology: the cableway system built in 1917 ran from Cogolo to the western summit of Vioz, Punta Linke at 3,629 metres. In the area around Cogolo, Punta Linke offers a summer visitor route through historic facilities preserved in the ice.

The old Chiesa dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo on the outskirts of Cogolo was built in 1332 and restored after a fire in 1804. Its northern wall features a large fresco cycle by Giovanni Angelo Valorsa from Grosio, dating from 1643. The Chiesetta di San Bartolomeo in Pegaia was declared a FAI Luogo del Cuore in 2022. Its apse wall preserves three fresco panels, including a monumental depiction of San Cristoforo. The chapel stands alone in meadows along the road from Cogolo to the Valle della Mare. The Centrale Idroelettrica di Cogolo is also part of the area's distinctive history and is a remarkable example of 1920s industrial architecture. Its large rooms are decorated using the historic graffito technique.

Walks, Cycle Routes and Mountain Landscapes

For peaceful trails, the Sentiero Botanico follows the old road that connected Cogolo with Peio. The Camminata tra i masi begins at the Chiesetta di San Bartolomeo in Pegaia near Cogolo di Peio and leads through forests, pastures and mown meadows, as well as characteristic mountain farmsteads. The hike from Cogolo di Peio to the Chiesetta di Santa Lucia is an easy walk through the forest and offers an impressive viewpoint over the valley.

Cyclists also have a clearly described connection: the Pista Ciclabile Val di Sole begins in Cogolo, follows the banks of the Noce and extends for 35 kilometres along the Torrente Noce. The Bike Train operates on the Mostizzolo–Mezzana route and is equipped to transport bicycles. In winter, the Centro Fondo di Cogolo has five cross-country skiing circuits, with a total of 15 kilometres of groomed trails.

Traditions in the Town Centre

The traditional Fera de Cogol is a livestock exhibition in the town centre of Cogolo. It includes a procession of cows through the streets of Cogolo, symbolising their return from the mountain pastures. At the Palio delle Frazioni, the local settlements compete against one another in a traditional contest involving tasks such as mowing hay and cutting wood.

When choosing a hotel in Cogolo, you can weigh up culture, walks, cycling tours and cross-country skiing as the focus of your stay. Churches, the museum, trails along the Noce and the Centro Fondo offer different highlights.
