Memorial Sites and Paths into Mountain History

The “Pejo 1914–1918. The War at the Doorstep” museum displays uniforms, personal belongings, a field kitchen, the container of a cable car from Punta Linke, a first-aid hut, a tabernacle used in the trenches and a portable altar. The various objects provide a tangible insight into the history of the First World War.

Together with Stelvio National Park, the museum organizes information evenings and excursions to First World War sites. Every year at the beginning of September, a memorial service for the fallen is held at the former San Rocco cemetery.

The route to Punta Linke leads from Peio via SAT Trail No. 105. It climbs from Doss dei Cembri at an altitude of 2,300 m to the Vioz Mantova mountain hut; Doss dei Cembri can be reached by cable cars. Punta Linke is a First World War memorial site that is probably one of the highest memorial sites in Europe. Punta Linke also has a visitor trail and is open to the public in summer.

In the surrounding area, you can discover the Austrian Barbadifior Fort on an easy walk. The fort was built at an altitude of 1,600 m and used as a barracks during the First World War.

Church Art in Peio Paese

Peio Paese lies in a hollow dominated by San Rocco Hill. At the San Giorgio bell tower, the current structure of the monumental complex dates from the late 15th century. The bell tower of San Giorgio Church was built between 1480 and 1483 by craftsmen from Como and Val Camonica. The Church of Santi Giorgio e Lazzaro has five altars. A restored figure of Saint Christopher, around 7 metres high, is also located at San Giorgio. Shortly after the building was constructed, it was created by the brothers Giovanni and Battista Baschenis from Averaria.

Nature Themes and Easy Walks

In 1885, archaeological finds from the Gallic, Celtic or Raetic period were discovered on San Rocco Hill, demonstrating human presence since the distant past. Malga Talè has a themed trail dedicated to Alpine grouse and their complex strategies for adapting to the environment. A very easy walk from Peio Paese leads to the Capercaillie Forest. There, you can learn about the way of life of wild birds and their adaptation to the surrounding environment.

Planning Peio as Your Base

Peio Paese has narrow and steep streets. When choosing a hotel in Peio, you can therefore compare your planned destinations and desired amount of daily activity with the layout of the village. Historic visits, routes to memorial sites and nature experiences offer different focal points for your planning.
