Acquabona among quarries, nature and history

Acquabona reveals an unusually clear connection between geology, nature observation and local history. The quarry areas are considered a geological site of undisputed palaeontological value. This creates a destination whose character is understood not only through a single attraction, but through the interplay of rock, plant life, historical traces and old routes.

Geology and nature at the Cave dell’Acquabona

The limestone of Acquabona is part of the Rosignano Limestone Formation and dates from the late Miocene. This geological classification explains why the quarries are so important to the landscape and its history. The Cave dell’Acquabona area is of regional conservation interest because of its noteworthy botanical species.

The rare Bivonea di Savi is among the area’s distinctive plants. In Tuscany, this flower grows in only a few locations. The Cave dell’Acquabona area also includes numerous orchid species.

A path through the landscape

The Sentiero 00 – La Dorsale delle colline Livornesi also establishes a direct connection with the Cave dell’Acquabona. After crossing the village of Le Serre, the trail descends along unpaved paths to the caves and quarry areas.

Quarries with a long history of use

The historic quarries of Acquabona were located near Rosignano Marittimo. From the Middle Ages until the 20th century, the limestone was widely used as an inexpensive, low-quality building material. The rock therefore represents not only the area’s geological past, but also a long history of human use.

The quarries reached their most intensive extraction phase between 1924 and 1928. During this period, they employed up to 500 workers.

The material extracted from the Acquabona quarries was transported by cableway directly to the plant in Rosignano Nuovo and later to the plant in Rosignano Solvay. This connection shows how closely limestone extraction was linked to the nearby plants.

Mills, watercourse and visible traces

Three historic mills near Acquabona still have clearly visible remains. They are easily accessible from Traversa Livornese road (No. 10). In the past, they were supplied via a weir on the Botro dell’Acquabona, a right-bank tributary of the Fine.

Remembrance and old routes

In the village of Acquabona, a memorial plaque commemorates four people who were killed by retreating German troops on 5 July 1944.

As early as 1630, Acquabona was a post station and a station for changing horses. This early function along a transport route provides another historical perspective on the village. If you would like to combine nature, geology and history in your trip, the botanical features, the course of the Sentiero 00, the quarries, mills and memorial plaque can be considered as different focal points in your planning.
