Gabbro Between History and Landscape

Gabbro combines medieval origins with a landscape where rock, fossils and historical traces stand closely side by side. This makes the town particularly suitable for travellers who, on a trip to Italy, want to explore not just a single attraction but the character of a smaller cultural landscape.

Historical Traces Around the Town

Gabbro has medieval origins. Silvestro Lega often stayed during his so-called “Gabbro period” at the villa of the Bandini family, who were friends of his, in Poggio Piano. Villa Mirabella, also known by the local name “Il Palazzo”, is another notable historical destination. It stands on a hill southeast of Gabbro and was presumably built in the 1740s as a summer residence for the Finocchietti family.

The Castello Sonnino and Castello Pasquini castles are also located in the vicinity of Gabbro. Those interested in cultural history can likewise visit the Amici Di Castiglioncello Museum and the In Villa di Odierna Roberto Museum. Numerous watermills once stood along the upper valley of the Botro Sanguigna, and their remains have survived. In Gabbro, the “Solenne Benedizione degli Animali” is traditionally held every year in the church square on the Sunday closest to the feast of Sant’Antonio Abate.

Serpentine and Fossils

The natural surroundings also have a clearly distinctive character. Serpentine is extensively exposed around Gabbro and forms the entire characteristic ridge of Monte Carvoli. Near Gabbro, a fossil deposit contains fish, leaves, seeds from various plants, insects, insect larvae and bird feathers. Those who perceive the landscape not merely as a backdrop but also in its geological and natural-history dimensions will therefore find many specific points of interest here.

Hiking with Clear Planning Details

The section of the Strada del Mille from Gabbro to Laghetto delle Serre is 7 km long and has 375 m of ascent and 215 m of descent. Both the route length and the elevation changes are therefore relevant to your planning. The Strada del Mille can be reached from the public car park on Via delle Capanne in Gabbro via the southeastern side exit and a footpath of just under 1 km along Via Miramare.

The Sentiero 199, known as the “Strada del Mille”, leads to Gabbro and the vicinity of Villa Mirabella. Nature and historical architecture therefore meet along the trails, without requiring the two themes to become separate experiences.

Beaches in the Wider Surrounding Area

If you would like to combine your stay with excursions to the coast, the beaches of Cala del Leone, Spiaggia di Calignaia, Bagno Aurora and Bagno Ausonia are located in the vicinity of Gabbro. This allows Gabbro’s local history to be combined with a variety of landscape impressions in the wider surrounding area.
