Vada combines the coast, cycling and Roman history.

Beach and Coastal Landscape

Spiaggia di Vada has light-colored, fine sand. The shore area combines the light-colored sand with the very shallow seabed and the surrounding pine forest. Its very shallow seabed enables easy access to the sea and safe swimming. The shallow depth characterizes the area immediately along the shore, while the light-colored sand defines the surface of the beach. Spiaggia di Vada is surrounded by an extensive pine forest and accompanied by a footpath and cycle path. Thus, in addition to sand and water, the landscape at the beach also includes the forest and the accompanying path.

Water Sports and Cycling

The Spiagge Bianche stretch for more than 4 kilometers between Rosignano Solvay and Vada. Surfing, sailing activities and kitesurfing take place along this stretch of coast. For water sports enthusiasts, the more than 4-kilometer stretch between Rosignano Solvay and Vada provides the geographical setting for these three activities. The distance between the two places establishes a geographical framework for these activities. The three sports complement the coastal landscape with movement on the water. Rosignano Solvay and Vada mark the two places between which the Spiagge Bianche extend.

An official 80.2-kilometer cycling tour leads through Vada and runs via Via di Pietrabianca through pine forest in the direction of Mazzanta. For cycling travelers, the loop connects Vada with Via di Pietrabianca, the pine forest and the direction of Mazzanta. When planning personally, the total length of 80.2 kilometers can be taken into account for the cycling tour. Anyone incorporating the tour can consider its total length separately from the specific details of its route.

Roman Traces in Vada

Vada was an Etruscan and later Roman port of Volterra. At San Gaetano in Vada, excavations uncovered a large Roman district adjoining the port. The Roman district of San Gaetano included two thermal complexes, warehouses, a monumental fountain and a building belonging to a workers' corporation. From the Etruscan port period through the Roman district to the Torre del Faro, this forms a chronological sequence in which the Pisans appear as the tower's builders and the Medici as its restorers.

Vada Volaterrana has a 3D reconstruction of the ancient harbor district that can be explored virtually. For those interested in culture, the virtual exploration provides an additional opportunity to engage with the ancient harbor district. The digital reconstruction supplements Vada's Roman history with a virtual form.

The “Torre del Faro” tower in Vada was built by the Pisans and later restored by the Medici.

Getting There and Orientation

Vada is located on the Roma–Genova coastal railway line and has a train station. The railway line is therefore just as much part of the locality as the coast, the cycling tour and the Roman harbor district.
