Carbonifera between Beach and Nature

The place is one of the beach resorts of the Parco Costiero della Sterpaia, whose landscape covers approximately 296 hectares in the wide gulf between Piombino and Follonica. The Parco Costiero della Sterpaia was included in the protected-area system of the Tuscany region in 1998. It is designated as an Anpil, meaning a local nature reserve according to the Italian term “Area naturale protetta di interesse locale”. This category for parks and regional protected areas was provided for by Law No. 49 of 11 April 1995.

The Parco Naturale della Sterpaia has an 8-kilometre-long beach, of which 6 kilometres are free beach. The beach system to which Carbonifera belongs features light-coloured, fine sand and is bordered by a narrow strip of dunes. The more extensive dunes also contain sections of coastal pine forest. This means that the coast can be viewed not only as a bathing area, but also as a landscape of sand, dunes and forest.

Practical Information at the Beach

In Località Carbonifera, near the “Carbonifera 1” car park, there is an equipped beach and a beach resort. Two restaurants are also located in this area. There are paid car and motorhome parking spaces at Carbonifera beach. Use of the Parco Costiero della Sterpaia is free of charge. These different facilities help you organise your stay according to your own daily rhythm between nature, beach and food, without reducing the landscape to a single holiday theme.

Torre Carbonifera and the History of the Coast

The Torre Carbonifera is a 19th-century tower. Its name refers to the site’s former function as a commercial landing place. The railway line ending at Torre Carbonifera transported coal from the mines of Montebamboli to the sea. The coastline near Carbonifera also has a maritime past: in 1970, a refuge for small boats was established at the mouth of the Fosso Valnera under the protection of the reef. These historical references add tangible traces of transport, the coal trade and small-scale shipping to your stay.

Moorings and Maritime Infrastructure

The Circolo Nautico Carbonifera has approximately 319 berths for boats measuring between 6.5 and 8 metres in length. Berths in the water and on land can be rented there for periods of varying length. The Circolo Nautico also provides parking spaces, a crane, a slipway, drinking water and electricity at the quay. Berths or a secure mooring are available to members and non-members.
