Populonia between Etruscan Heritage and Coastal Views

Populonia is considered the only Etruscan city built by the sea. Its character is shaped by the Rocca di Populonia on a hill, the Acropolis of Populonia and the Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia. Here, Etruscan and Roman history combines with Mediterranean landscapes and routes that can be explored independently.

Rocca, Acropolis and Museum

The Rocca di Populonia is located in the eponymous district of Piombino on a hill, overlooking the Gulf of Baratti, the coast north of Piombino and the stretch of sea between the mainland and the Tuscan Archipelago. The Rocca’s elevated position connects the historic structure with views across the coastal area as far as the Tuscan Archipelago. This setting makes the Rocca a distinctive point of reference for the connection between the historic site and the coastal landscape.

The tour of the Acropolis of Populonia leads to the remains of significant Roman temples that stood beside a large central square in the ancient city. It follows the ancient city wall and offers panoramic views of the northern coast and the island of Elba. The Museo Etrusco Gasparri di Populonia is also located in the Castello di Populonia at Via di Sotto 8; admission is subject to a fee.

Mediterranean Woodland and the Monastery of San Quirico

The vegetation of the Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia is predominantly Mediterranean woodland. Hidden in the woodland within the park is the Monastery of San Quirico. It dates back at least to the 11th century AD. The Monastery of San Quirico is located within the Mediterranean woodland in the park.

Routes with Different Focal Points

The Via del Monastero is a self-guided trekking route to the Benedictine Monastery of San Quirico. It can be started either at the Baratti visitor centre or in the area of the Acropolis of Populonia. The Via del Ferro is an easy, self-guided route between impressive tumulus tombs and ancient iron-processing facilities in Populonia’s industrial district. The Via del Monastero offers a choice of two starting points; the Via del Ferro is considered an easy route.

Experience the Past in Practice

At the Centro di Archeologia Sperimentale “Davide Mancini”, you can take part in practical activities using ancient techniques and make everyday objects from prehistoric times through the Etruscan period. The centre complements an on-site visit with hands-on work using ancient techniques.

Access to the restored Tomba dei Carri was reinstated in July 2022; admission was possible only with a guided tour. When choosing a hotel, you can use the site’s specific focal points as a guide: the museum and acropolis, the Mediterranean woodland and monastery, or one of the two self-guided routes. This allows you to plan your stay around the interests you wish to pursue in Populonia.
