Fiorentina: Archaeology, Beaches and Nature

Fiorentina appeals to travelers who want to combine Etruscan and Roman history, paths through meadows and woodland, as well as beaches and protected landscapes. The combination of culture, nature and practical orientation makes the area interesting for a variety of travel interests.

Walk to the Le Grotte Necropolis

The Le Grotte Necropolis can be reached on foot in 40 minutes; the route leads partly uphill through meadows and woodland. Along the way is the Centro di Archeologia Sperimentale “Davide Mancini” in the meadow area known as Campo dell’Arpia. The alternation of open meadows, woodland and an uphill section characterizes this approach.

Populonia and archaeological sites

The ancient site of the Necropolis of Populonia is located near Fiorentina. Also nearby are the Necropoli di San Cerbone museum, the Museo Archelogico del Territorio di Populonia museum and the Museum of Entomology. The museums broaden the cultural experience beyond a single archaeological site.

The Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia encompasses the area where the Etruscan and Roman city of Populonia was built. In the upper part of the park are the Acropolis of Populonia, with temples, buildings, mosaics and Roman roads. This means the park combines the history of a historic city with tangible archaeological structures and landscape features.

Beaches and coastal landscapes

The beaches of Altamarea, Fosso alle Canne and Calamoresca are located near Fiorentina. Ultima Spiaggia beach is located in the vicinity of Fiorentina.

Sterpaia Coastal Park includes an 8-kilometer-long sandy beach awarded the Blue Flag, 124 hectares of dunes and back-dunes, as well as 155 hectares of woodland and open agricultural areas. In addition to the long sandy beach, the landscape is therefore also shaped by dunes, back-dunes, woodland and open agricultural land.

Padule Orti Bottagone Nature Reserve

The Padule Orti Bottagone WWF Oasis is a 126-hectare regional nature reserve in the municipality of Piombino and lies within Special Conservation Area IT5160010, Special Protection Area IT5160010 and a Ramsar site. The visitor center of the Padule Orti Bottagone WWF Oasis is located on SP40 “Base Geodetica” between Piombino and Riotorto.

Roads branch off from the so-called Geodetica, providing access to Sterpaia Coastal Park and its beaches; the Geodetica connects Piombino with Riotorto. For you, Fiorentina’s appeal lies in this range of history, museums, walking paths, beaches and extensive natural areas.
