Campello Sul Clitunno between springs, mountains and culture

Campello Sul Clitunno combines a unique spring landscape with mountain trails, medieval architecture and Italian olive oil culture. The Fonti del Clitunno, Monte Serano, Campello Alto and the Tempietto del Clitunno each offer a different focus for planning your trip.

Spring landscape and nature

The Fonti del Clitunno are located in the hamlet of Le Vene, at the most important water outlet of the Clitunno spring complex. The springs include a lake basin surrounded by a public park. The landscape features lush aquatic and marsh vegetation, including mosses, horsetails, watercress and forget-me-nots.

Because of the special features of its flora and fauna, the area of the Fonti del Clitunno has been designated a Site of Community Importance. The spring landscape therefore forms an independent natural area around Campello Sul Clitunno alongside the mountains.

Mountains and hiking experience

The trail “Da Pettino a Pettino passando per Croce Sant’Angelo, monte Serano, fonte Morigo” leads to the summit of Monte Serano at an altitude of 1,429 metres. On the return route, it passes through a beech forest and runs through a mountain area on the border between the municipalities of Trevi and Campello sul Clitunno. For hikers, the route thus combines a summit, mountain landscape and forest in a clearly described itinerary.

Monte Vergozze is also located in the vicinity of Campello sul Clitunno. Monte Serano, Monte Felcito and Monte Santo are mountains in the area around the town.

Early medieval architecture and fortifications

In the hamlet of Pissignano, near the Fonti del Clitunno, stands the Tempietto del Clitunno, which is dedicated to San Salvatore. It is considered one of Umbria’s most important early medieval monuments and forms part of the UNESCO serial World Heritage Site “I Longobardi in Italia. I luoghi del potere (568–774 d.C.)”.

Its façade has four Corinthian columns. The reliefs depict vines and grapes framing a Latin cross. Another notable building is Campello Alto: there, a circular medieval fortification preserves a roughly 500-metre-long circular wall, towers and a single entrance gate.

The Casa d’Arte di Romano Notari offers visits by appointment without an admission ticket, in exchange for a voluntary donation to the foundation. Palazzo Racani Arroni, a palace, is also located in the area around Campello sul Clitunno. Street Art Spoleto, the Galleria D'Arte 1631 Antiquariato D'Alta Epoca and the Museo Diocesiano are likewise located nearby; all three are museums.

Olive oil and regional events

At its site in Campello sul Clitunno, MARFUGA organises tours of its facilities with tastings of extra virgin olive oil. The Festa dei Frantoi e dei Castelli is an oleogastronomic event that has attracted strong participation for more than 40 years.
