Between the Martani Trails and Olive-Covered Slopes

The Martani Trekking trail network crosses Giano dell'Umbria; its individual trails are marked in the terrain with trail markers and information signs. The landscape of the Monti Martani between Giano dell'Umbria and Morcicchia includes olive groves and farmland on slopes at elevations of up to 550 to 600 metres. Monte Martano is considered a trekking area and offers views over the Umbrian plain and the surrounding mountains.

For your planning, routes of different lengths and several ways of getting around are available. The route Among Millennial Olive Trees and Benedictine Abbeys is 10.5 km long and can be travelled by car, on foot or by mountain bike. The route Strolling through Castles…between History and Legend is 7.8 km long and can likewise be travelled by car, on foot or by mountain bike.

Walls, Churches and Medieval Traces

Giano dell'Umbria preserves two circular medieval rings of walls with gates, towers and small gateways. The walls date from the 12th or 13th century and were restored in the 14th century on the orders of Cardinal Albornoz. In addition, the Palazzo Pubblico has medieval origins and was remodelled several times over the centuries. A municipal coat of arms from the 14th or 15th century remains embedded at the entrance.

The Chiesa di San Francesco dates from the second half of the 13th century and preserves a wooden organ from the 18th century. Its Cappella del Crocifisso contains a cycle of frescoes attributed to the painter Giovanni di Corraduccio from Foligno.

The archaeological evidence is also distributed across specific locations. The local archaeological museum, the Antiquarium, preserves finds from excavations at the Villa Rufione in the hamlet of Toccioli. The excavation of the Villa Rufione uncovered 18 rooms, including two rooms belonging to a bathing complex. The mosaics have survived only in part; the same applies to sections of the wall decoration consisting of marble cladding and frescoes. The Palazzo Pubblico also houses archaeological finds from an ancient Roman villa discovered in the hamlet of Toccioli.

Olive Oil, Wine and Regional Events

Giano dell'Umbria lies within the production area of the Colli Martani DOC wines. The area comprises three designation-of-origin zones: two for wine and one for extra virgin olive oil. At the Oro di Giano premises in Macciano, tastings and participation in company events are offered. The experience Visit & Taste includes a tasting of Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG with Pecorino, as well as organic extra virgin olive oil with bruschetta.

A recurring event is the Fiera di San Francesco. It takes place every year on the first Sunday in October in the centre of the hamlet of Bastardo. La Mangiaunta took place in Giano dell'Umbria for its 19th edition from 1 November to 3 November 2024; the programme for La Mangiaunta 2024 included tours of oil mills, workshops, music, walks and activities for children. The exhibition Immortal Olive Trees begins in the monumental San Francesco complex and extends across the area of Giano dell'Umbria, where the olive tree has found suitable growing conditions for years.
