Discover Campagna: History, Tradition and Trails near Sorriva

Muvar is located in LocalitĂ  Campagna di Sorriva, 32030 Sovramonte (BL), Italy. For your trip to Campagna, this place brings together early human history, regional traditions and trails through the landscape. Depending on your interests, you can focus on culture, exercise or local everyday history.

Muvar and the history of Val Rosna

Around nine exhibition rooms at Muvar explore topics related to the burial of the Man of Val Rosna. These include the discovery sites, the way of life of prehistoric humans and the distinctive burial. The Man of Val Rosna lived 14,000 years ago. His burial, covered with painted stones, is considered one of the oldest known forms of funerary art. The Hunter of Val Rosna may have been the first known person in history to receive dental treatment for tooth decay.

Muvar offers guided tours, educational workshops, excursions in the surrounding area and Living History activities. This allows the visit to be experienced from different perspectives: the exhibitions focus on archaeological topics, while guided tours, workshops and Living History activities offer different ways of presenting them. Excursions complement the program with impressions beyond the exhibition rooms.

Trails between the watercourse and the plateau

The “La via dell’acqua: basso corso dell’Ausor” trail runs between the Sorriva plain and the lower course of the Ausor. An e-mountain bike route also starts in Sorriva, leads via Servo towards Aune and then via Prese along a gravel road to Col di Mic. It then returns to Sorriva.

Sorriva, San Giorgio and local tradition

Sorriva lies on a level plateau landscape where cereals, legumes and potatoes have been cultivated for centuries. The Chiesa di San Giorgio also rises on the level ground near Sorriva. Here, the landscape, agriculture and religious architecture represent distinct, clearly recognizable aspects of the area.

The annual San Giorgio tradition includes carrying a large copper pot containing “la menestra de San Dordi”, a bean soup, to the houses in the surrounding area. This connects the religiously influenced local history with a vivid culinary tradition and makes regional food culture understandable as part of local life.

Practical planning for your visit

Muvar remains closed in November. Visits by groups and school classes are possible by reservation. If you would like to visit the site with a group or as part of a school program, this reservation is therefore one of the important points in your planning. For individual days, you can combine culture, trails and the landscape around Sorriva in varying proportions.
