San Gregorio Nelle Alpi: Trails, History and Local Festivals

San Gregorio Nelle Alpi combines nature experiences and culture in a varied travel itinerary. If you enjoy hiking while also discovering historic sites, sacred art, crafts or festivals, you will find themes for individual days. Hiking for different levels of ability

The Heart’s Path begins in front of the sports ground in San Gregorio Nelle Alpi. Around the village center of Roncoi, at the foot of Monte Pizzocco, it passes prehistoric fortifications, routes used by the Romans and ancient watchtowers. At Maserolle, you can take a detour to the Via dell’Acqua along the Torrente Veses. This allows you to experience natural and historical points of interest together on a single hike.

The other trails also focus on different aspects. The trail to Rifugio Casèra Ere is not demanding; however, experienced hikers are required for the slopes above the hut. The ascent to Monte Pizzocco offers exceptional panoramic views and requires good physical fitness. Historical traces from antiquity to the Early Iron Age

The area of San Gregorio Nelle Alpi was crossed by the Via Claudia Augusta Altinate, an important route across the Alps. Castel de Pedena is a high-altitude protohistoric archaeological site dating from the period between the Early Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age (9th century BC). Important structural and domestic remains were discovered there.

The Church of San Lucano contains an early medieval pluteus with early Christian representations, as well as valuable altarpieces from the 17th and 18th centuries. The church was rebuilt in 1701 in a more centrally located position. Villa Sandi has a square floor plan and is flanked by two towers, giving it the appearance of a miniature castle.

Museum, market and festival days

The Museo delle Zoche e della Tarsia has a collection of roots from centuries-old trees, as well as wood inlays made by local sculptors. Visits to the museum should be arranged by telephone or email. This allows you to incorporate a cultural stop into your plans in a targeted way.

In the Paderno district, a market for organic farming takes place on the last weekend of July, focusing on strawberries and organically grown mountain berries. In Roncoi, the Festa della smonticazione takes place on the last weekend of September, marking the return of livestock from the mountain pastures.
