Petritoli brings together two historic medieval town centers: the area includes Petritoli and Moregnano. Between the theater, churches, palazzi, old paths and rural routes, it offers a destination that appeals to culture enthusiasts as well as anyone looking to combine a stay with cycling, walks and regional cuisine.

Historic Buildings and Living Culture

One special venue is the Teatro dell'Iride di Petritoli. It was built from 1871 based on designs by the engineer Giuseppe Sabbatini from Montegiorgio and continues to host various kinds of theater and music performances. Every three years, the town also hosts the International Oboe Competition in honor of Giuseppe Tomassini, who was born in Petritoli.

The churches also preserve remarkable historical treasures. Santa Maria ad Martyres houses an organ made by Gaetano Callido in 1777. San Prospero is the oldest surviving church in Petritoli and a Romanesque building dating from the 13th century. Santa Maria in Piazza was built on the site of the old S. Marziale church; its financing began in 1537 through Pope Paul III.

Palazzo Mannocchi was built at the end of the 18th century on 15th-century defensive walls. Its ceilings are decorated with frescoes in the neoclassical style, while a Gothic terracotta arch from the 14th century has been preserved outside. You can also encounter such layers of history at today's Tre Archi: they were built in 1872 after the old Porta Petrania gate was demolished and were designed in the Neo-Gothic style.

Another insight into local history can be found at the Antica Stamperia Fabiani. The craft workshop was founded by the Fabiani family, whose members have worked as printers in Petritoli since 1903. Guided tours and educational workshops are aimed at schools, families and tourists. The Luigi Mannocchi Public Library contains works by authors from Petritoli, the Guerriero-Passamonti music collection and a local documentation department with materials about Petritoli and the Piceno region.

Petritoli is also home to a valuable mural by the painter Dario Galeazzi, as well as relics of S. Anatolia and S. Innocenzo. In the Papagnano district, the Antiche Fonti preserve traces of Roman, late medieval and Renaissance construction phases.

Routes Through the Town Center and Countryside

For a culture-focused exploration, the Way of Arts and Churches is an excellent choice. This cultural route begins at the Tre Archi and leads through the historic center of Petritoli to sites of art, religious buildings and evidence of public and cultural life. Surviving sections of the 15th-century defensive walls can be seen along a route following Via del Teatro, Via dei Muraglioni and the street known as Sottoripa.

The restored Sentiero Sottoripa connects Via Petrollavia and Via Trieste with Via Marconi and runs along the southern side of Petritoli's historic center. For days spent on two wheels, two differently oriented routes are the main highlights: A Journey through History and Flavors is suitable for e-biking and passes through agricultural areas, vineyards and olive groves, with views of the Valdaso and the Sibillini Mountains. Discover the Slow Life of the Countryside is a circular route for e-bikes or mountain bikes and begins in the center of Petritoli.

The landscape can also be explored on foot, while trekking, on horseback or by bike. Petritoli has walking and hiking trails through olive groves, vineyards and woods. Regional Cuisine and Produce

Petritoli's traditional cuisine includes sausages and cured meats, aged cheeses, olives all'ascolana, vincisgrassi and homemade desserts. The hills around Petritoli produce extra virgin olive oil and wines such as Passerina, Pecorino, Montepulciano and Sangiovese. This makes it possible to complement a cultural stay with regional culinary experiences.
