Bolognola Among Springs, Mountains and History

Bolognola combines a distinctive natural landscape with medieval districts and individual examples of local artistic and architectural history. The sources of the Fiastrone River are located here, while the entire area of Bolognola lies within the Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini. The historic settlement consists of three medieval districts – a setting in which the landscape and the organically developed structure of the town complement each other directly.

Two routes with different characteristics are the focus for hiking and cycling experiences. “Fra Camosci ed Aquile” is a one-hour route from Bolognola to Fonte dell’Aquila, which can be completed on foot or by bicycle. “La Cascata Nascosta” runs from Bolognola to the Gola dell’Acquasanta and is also accessible on foot or by bicycle.

A distinctive natural site is Macchia Tonda, an almost circular beech forest. A monumental beech tree stands there, estimated to be around 380 years old. La Madonnina lies at an altitude of 1,480 metres and offers a 360-degree view over the surrounding area. It can be reached via a circular trail through beech forests and along streams, with changing mountain panoramas.

The hiking trails near Pintura di Bolognola lead through meadows, centuries-old beech forests and over mountain ridges from spring to autumn. Medieval Districts and Art

Bolognola’s history is reflected not only in the layout of the settlement. The town preserves remains of a medieval castle, including walls fitted with towers. Palazzo Primavera is one of Bolognola’s oldest civil buildings and dates from the 16th century. Palazzo Maurizi preserves particularly finely crafted decoration from the early 19th century; the painter Luigi Spazza, who came from Camerino, frescoed its rooms in 1824.

The religious buildings also bear several layers of history. The parish church of Bolognola now displays a panel depicting the Madonna del Rosario by Giulio Vergari, dating from 1519. The Chiesa di San Nicolò di Bari dates from the mid-19th century and stands on an older building erected between the second half of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century. As its oldest surviving element, the church preserves a bellows organ from the 18th century.

At Palazzo Primavera, the “I telai di Brunella” workshop offers a practical insight into traditional weaving. Villa da Capo, Villa da Mezzo and Villa da Piedi each have a historic spring. These individual places and features also make Bolognola interesting for travellers who wish to combine mountain landscapes with regional history, crafts and architecture.

An Annual December Event

On 8 December, “Pinturicchio”, the highest Christmas tree in the Marche, is illuminated on the mountainside near La Madonnina. The event creates a distinctive seasonal accent in the mountain landscape around Bolognola.
