Altrei combines peaceful forest and meadow trails with a remarkable local history. The trails extend from the village centre to moors, alpine pastures and viewpoints; at the same time, historic sites and local events tell of the distinctive character of the area.

Forest Trails, Moors and Views of the Trudner Horn

Anterivo is located in the Monte Corno Nature Park and is a hiking village certified at European level. Altrei also offers a variety of landscape experiences: From the village centre at 1,222 m, an old paved trail marked 5 leads across meadows and through the forest to the Langen Moos at 1,452 m. From there, follow the forest road marked 9 to the Krabes Alm at 1,540 m.

The Altrei–Trudner Horn–Altrei hike leads across extensive larch meadows and past quiet moors to the Horn Alm and the Trudner Horn at 1,710 m. On the way back to Altrei, it passes the lime kilns and leads through spruce and fir forests. From the Trudner Horn, views open up over the Fiemme Alps. Among South Tyrol’s nature parks, Trudner Horn Nature Park has the richest flora and fauna; Anterivo also has a diverse flora and fauna.

Discover Altrei’s History on Short Trails

The Altrei Legends Trail is a family-friendly walking and hiking trail through the forests of Altrei. Along the way, local legendary figures such as witches, Morelweibelen and strong forest men are brought to life. The Burgstall hill in Altrei offers a different perspective on the past: Based on pottery-shard finds and the name “Burgstall”, a prehistoric settlement or castle is suspected to have stood there. Today, the hill is a viewpoint of tourist interest.

The museum in the former home of Bishop Johannes Zwerger displays furnishings, writings, pictures and documents that illustrate the life and work of Johannes Zwerger. Altrei’s old courthouse still stands at No. 4 Gottschalkstraße.

Kneipp Treatments and Regional Specialities

From Altrei village centre, the Kneipp facility at Sandegg can be reached on foot in about 10 minutes via Trail No. 3; the trail leads in the direction of the Trudner Horn. The Kneipp facility is closed during the winter months. A guided hike in the area around Anterivo leads through shady forests and flowering meadows to viewpoints overlooking the surrounding mountains. The hike also includes a tasting of chocolate from Anterivo.

At an event in Anterivo, the process from legume to “coffee” made from Anterivo lupin is explained. This is followed by a tasting of specialities made from Anterivo lupin. The annual Desmontegada in Anterivo brings the livestock into the village at around 12:30 p.m.; the festival then begins in the square in front of the cultural centre.

Getting There and Cycling Tour

To travel to Altrei, take the train from Bolzano railway station to Neumarkt–Tramin railway station, then take bus route 144 to the “Zentrum” stop.

A separate cycling loop is also described: The Altrei–Trudner Horn Alm–Altrei cycling tour leads uphill through the forest over the Ziss-Sattel to the Horn Alm at 1,710 m; the return to Altrei follows a pleasant descent.
