Frangarto between Castle, Art and Cultural Landscape
Frangarto lies at the foot of Sigmundskron Castle. Above the village, on Mount Mitterberg, stands the castle housing the Messner Mountain Museum MMM Firmian. MMM Firmian explores the relationship between people and mountains from spiritual, artistic, philosophical and cultural perspectives. Its location on Mount Mitterberg provides a tangible spatial framework for the connection between castle and museum. Those who do not wish to view culture and nature separately will find a place here offering different ways to engage with history, art and landscape.
Culture between Castle and Village
MMM Firmian is open seasonally from the third Sunday in March to the second Sunday in November. It is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00, with last admission at 17:00; the museum is closed on Thursdays. The 17:00 last admission means that the museum visit must be scheduled to end before the opening hours finish.
The parish church of Frangarto is Neo-Gothic and dedicated to Saint Joseph. Its eastern façade features a Marian mosaic dating from 1903. Ansitz Pillhof is also part of the village’s appearance. It is preserved historic architecture dating from the 15th century; today, it houses a wine shop. In Frangarto, sacred architecture, historic buildings and a place dedicated to wine thus come together under a common cultural theme.
Art with Sweeping Views of the Landscape
The private Kunstpark Hochfrangart sculpture park is located high above Frangart. A viewing point with sweeping views across the landscape is situated by the park’s large sphere. The park’s elevated location determines the perspective on the landscape. For visitors who wish to combine outdoor art with open landscapes, this place provides a distinctive feature within Frangarto’s cultural and natural attractions.
Cycling Tours and Long Walks
Frangart is a good starting point for cycling tours. The village is also suitable as a starting point for long walks through natural and cultural landscapes. The two options offer different focal points: by bicycle, the surrounding area can be experienced as a tour, while long walks take in the connection between nature and culturally shaped landscapes. Frangarto therefore appeals to travellers who do not wish to devote their days exclusively to a single museum or building.
For cyclists, the location near the Adige Valley Cycle Route is also significant. Together with its suitability as a starting point for cycling tours, this creates a clear theme for planning a trip. Those who choose Frangarto as their base can therefore plan their stay around cultural visits, landscape experiences, cycling tours or extended walks. Sigmundskron Castle, MMM Firmian, the parish church, Ansitz Pillhof and Kunstpark Hochfrangart each add their own distinct focus.
