Ridanna between mining history and mountain trails

Ridanna combines mining history with trails through the valley and alpine viewpoints. The permanent exhibition focuses on the local mining tradition and displays personal belongings as well as private photographs of miners and their families. Another exhibition explains methods for surveying tunnels and mining areas for tunnel excavation and the use of mining sites. This allows you to explore the working world of mining through both personal testimonies and technical contexts.

Experience Mining Up Close

During the “Tour del minatore,” visitors descend almost 300 steps and return to the Poschhaus Gallery. Ore veins are still visible there, and you can also try your hand at being a miner. The tour first takes you by shuttle bus to the Poschhaus Gallery at an altitude of 2,000 meters. You then travel by mine railway toward the ore deposits before the guided tour through tunnels and galleries begins. Reservation is mandatory for the tour; bookings can be made by telephone or email.

Mining Tours and Trails

The mining museum’s “A Day in the Mine” tour includes a two-and-a-half-hour mountain hike along old paths used by miners and for ore transport, leading to the miners’ village of Monteneve. The return route of this tour covers 6 kilometers: you walk 3 kilometers and travel a further 3 kilometers by mine railway. The route thus combines exercise in the mountains with insights into the history of ore mining.

St. Magdalena Chapel

The nearby St. Magdalena Chapel was first mentioned in 1273. The present building was erected in 1480/81 by the miners of the Schneeberg mine. Inside is a late Gothic winged altarpiece from the workshop of Matheis Stöberl, dating from 1509.

Hiking in the Ridanna Valley

Several different routes are available for hiking. The circular hike in the Ridanna Valley starts at the community center in Ridanna, follows the Obere Erzstraße to Maiern and the mining museum, and continues to St. Magdalena Church before returning to the starting point. From the head of the Ridanna Valley, hiking trail no. 9 leads through the forest to the entrance of the Burkhard Gorge. The hike to Stadlalm also begins at the head of the valley and follows hiking trail no. 28 past the mine’s ore-processing plant.

Mountain Views and Winter Sports

The Fuchssee 360° panoramic platform is located in the Ridanna alpine pasture area and offers a 360° panoramic view. Important mountain peaks and mountain ranges are marked in the direction of view for orientation. In winter, the Ridanna biathlon center adds another option: it has a shooting range and is located directly at the start of the cross-country skiing trails in Ridanna.

How to Reach the Mining Museum

Bus route 312 runs from Vipiteno to the final stop, Museo delle Miniere. The stop is located directly at the parking lot next to the museum.
