Terlan between Wine Routes and History

Terlan combines a winemaking tradition dating back more than 2,000 years with vineyards, orchards, historic architecture and village festivals. Those who want to discover not only the landscape but also the history of a wine-growing village during their holiday will find several different ways to do so here: the Terlan Wine Route, religious and medieval culture, as well as wine, asparagus and events.

Winegrowing and asparagus as defining themes

The Terlan Wine Route is a themed trail through the wine-growing landscape of Terlano. It provides information about vineyard sites, grape varieties, training systems and the history of viticulture. The trail begins at Cantina Terlano and includes a total of 20 information panels. Cantina Terlano was founded in 1893 and offers guided tours with wine tastings. A short guided tour through the asparagus fields of Terlano is followed by a tasting of three wines at Cantina Terlano. Asparagus from Terlano is marketed under the quality brand and quality seal „Margarete“. Asparagus cultivation in Vilpiano, Settequerce and Terlano has a centuries-old tradition.

Church, bell tower and medieval traces

The 75-metre-high bell tower of Terlan is known as the „Leaning Tower of Terlan“ and was rebuilt between 1891 and 1893. The parish church of Terlan is a late Gothic building from the 14th century and houses South Tyrol’s richest collection of frescoes. The historical and cultural association Niedertor et Servitus focuses on researching and presenting medieval everyday life and its culture in historic Tyrol, particularly in the late 14th and early 15th centuries. A steep path leads to the ruins of Castel Maultasch in around 20 minutes. The ruins of Castel Casanova (Maultasch) probably date back to the 13th century and were built as a double castle.

Festivals with music, dancing and specialities

The Kletterbaum Festival takes place every two years and includes the traditional „Bandltanz“ dance, music and gastronomic specialities. The Hoametfescht is a village festival in Terlano that takes place every year on the first or second weekend of August and includes gastronomic specialities, music and traditional games. Alongside winemaking and architectural history, recurring cultural events therefore also form part of the character of the village.

Vilpiano, waterfall and the Salto plateau

In the village district of Vilpiano, the Rio Meltina plunges 82 metres into the depths and subsequently forms the Vilpiano Waag. The waterfall is designated as a natural heritage site. The cable car from Vilpiano to Meltina reaches the Salto plateau in four minutes; there is a network of hiking and mountain biking trails there.
