Neumarkt is best experienced through its arcades, buildings and the trails leading from Egna and Laag into the surrounding landscape. If you would like to combine cultural history with a walk, you will find several different points of interest here. For those interested in culture, the topics range from historic buildings and Roman traces to trails through Trudner Horn Nature Park. The picturesque arcades of Neumarkt include 500-metre-long arcades in the historic centre of Egna. The Museum of Everyday Culture in Egna is housed in a historic building beneath the arcades. It displays everyday objects, furniture, accessories, toys and written records from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Architecture and Historical Traces

The parish church of St Nicholas in Egna combines several construction phases. Its Romanesque entrance porch dates from the 12th century and was renovated in the 15th century; the tower was built in the 13th century. The chancel is an outstanding example of late Gothic architecture and was built by the stonemason Konrad von Neumarkt. The Ballhaus stands opposite the parish church. The building dates from 1372 and served as a warehouse for shipping on the River Adige at the time.

The old Klösterle hospice in Egna also points to the historical importance of the town. It dates from the 12th century and served as a stopping point for travellers and pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land. The Roman past is associated with the “Mansio Endidae”: it was part of a military and postal station on the Via Claudia Augusta, recorded in the Itinerarium Antonini. Excavations in the “Kahn” area uncovered the remains of an ancient Roman building in 1983, which with a high degree of probability belonged to the “Mansio Endidae”.

Walking Trails and Natural Landscape

The Mazoner walking trail begins in the centre of Egna on Fleimstaler Straße. It can be combined with a tasting of Mazoner Pinot Noir. The Dürer Trail begins at the Klösterle in St Florian in Laag and leads from Laag through Trudner Horn Nature Park to Lago Santo, also known as Heiligensee. This places a walking trail connected with wine alongside a longer trail through the nature park as two different types of experience.

Market, Festival and Wine Estate

A weekly market takes place beneath the arcades in the historic centre of Egna. The Arcades Festival is considered South Tyrol’s oldest village festival and is associated with the historic centre of Egna. The Klosterhof Vill estate provides another highlight: this imposing two-storey wine estate acquired its present form in the 17th century and is considered one of the finest wine estates in the region. Together with the museum, parish church and Ballhaus, it creates a townscape in which everyday culture, sacred architecture, trade and the history of winegrowing stand side by side as distinct themes.
